With pleasant year-round temperatures in most areas of the state, California is the perfect place for those who cycle for commuting or pleasure. Riverside in Southern California is a particularly good cycling community.

In 2007, the City of Riverside adopted its Bicycle Master Plan, which aims to increase the number of local bicycle commuters by improving and expanding bikeways and other cycling routes and facilities. Bike lanes are currently present on most major streets in Riverside, but cyclists are welcome on all roadways regardless of whether there is a designated cycling lane.

Riverside is home to two official off-street bikeways. To the north of the city, the Santa Ana River Trail runs along the Santa Ana River through most of Riverside. Eventually, the trail will run the entire length of the river, from the San Bernardino Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

The other official off-street bikeway in Riverside is Victoria Avenue. In addition to a cycling path, this tree-lined parkway is an equestrian path. While automobile traffic runs through the Victoria Avenue parkway, the City of Riverside has added stop signs for the safety of cyclists.

Hiking enthusiasts in and around Riverside should take the time to explore Mount Rubidoux Trail and Memorial Park. Points of interest along the way range from the Peace Bridge to the American Flag landmark, in addition to a large cross structure at the top of Mount Rubidoux. Mount Rubidoux is also home to the nation’s longest-running outdoor Easter gathering.

Parking spaces are ample as numerous trails surround and ascend the mountain. The main trail provides a two mile hike, while shorter one mile trails can also be taken. Despite a three to four mile round trip, first time hikers are advised to set aside up to 90 minutes for the climb, as individuals will likely want to explore the various landmarks and enjoy the view from the summit before beginning their descent.

Other popular hiking destinations in and around Riverside include Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park and Box Springs Mountain.
